In 1923, the museum has faced several challenges with the happening of the earthquake in the year 1923, and the closing of the museum in 1945 during World War 2. In the 120 years of its past, it has gone through much transformation and evolution that accompany administrative changes and organizational reforms. This museum went through several name changes as well. The museum was called the Imperial Museum in 1886 and the Tokyo Imperial Household Museum in 1900, until it was given its present title in 1900.
